Programmes

The Clifton CID manages a range of programmes, each designed to deliver maximum impact in the public spaces. Interfaces between programmes are carefully crafted to ensure that each complements the other and information flows freely across programmes. Programme impact is measured on a monthly basis.

Public safety

The CID public safety programme integrates people, technology and systems in order to keep Clifton as safe as possible. Foot and vehicle patrols are conducted on a 24/7/365 basis, supplemented by camera monitoring and surveillance through the public spaces of Clifton.

The teams work alongside and in collaboration with SAPS, law enforcement, metro police, traffic services and private security service providers operating in the Clifton area.

We’re a member of the Camps Bay and Clifton Community Policing Forum.

Home Safety
  • Never allow strangers into your house – always confirm in advance identity and legitimacy
  • Invest and make use of a good overall security system
  • Ensure adequate lighting around your property perimeter
  • Trim shrubs around windows and entrances to prevent concealment
  • Leave interior lights on when you leave your home at night
  • If you are living in an apartment complex, don’t open entrance/foyer doors to strangers and prevent tailgating
  • Never disclose that you are home alone
  • Always be alert to vehicles or persons who may be following you
  • Help educate others about these safety precautions
  • Don’t leave firearms unattended
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers accessible (a list of emergency numbers can be found on our website here)
Car Safety
  • Keep your car doors locked at all times
  • Park in well-lit areas at night.
  • Keep enough distance from the car in front of your car to enable you to change lanes and drive away in a hurry.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers or strangers.
  • Look around before entering your driveway. Always have your car/house keys ready when walking to your car/entrance to your home.
  • Be alert to strangers begging at intersections and please don’t give them money – rather donate to a known charity.
  • Never open your car window when approached by a stranger.
  • If you think you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station.
  • Don’t keep any valuables visible inside your vehicle.

Cleaning and urban management

Our cleaning team ensures that the public spaces are kept clean. They work on the roads and pavements, on the beaches and stairways, and in the green belt. The programme runs 7 days a week and is a core part of Clifton CID’s drive to improve public spaces and work alongside the City’s Marine and Coastal Management teams to do our bit to protect the ocean.

The team also reports all infrastructure defects so that these can be escalated to the relevant City department for action.

Environmental upgrading

Clifton has magnificent green spaces and the CID’s environmental upgrading team is tasked with maintaining and improving these spaces. Their work makes Mother Nature look tidy but not manicured and is carefully managed to ensure the continued growth and health of the plants in the green spaces.
